Borrowed Weather

[Verse 1] The room above the locksmith Has a window painted shut I brought a tin of coffee And a spoon that won't fit in the cup My sister lent her yellow coat An umbrella with a crooked spoke The man who helped me off the train Said, "You expecting rain?" I said, "I hope." [Pre-Chorus] I check the sky before my phone The way we always did at home There's not a single cloud in sight I button up my coat too tight [Chorus] Borrowed weather I brought it on the train A little cloud of home That keeps forgetting where to rain Borrowed weather On a brand-new square The sun comes out to meet me And I don't know what to wear [Verse 2] They call me love at the corner shop I turn to see who knows my name A woman wraps my bread in paper And asks me if I've found my way I've learned which stair will wake the dog Which bus goes almost where I live I carry home a bowl, two oranges And all the change they had to give [Pre-Chorus] The coat has caught the smell of bread I hang it by the empty bed The pocket holds an old bus fare I check again; it's always there [Chorus] Borrowed weather I brought it on the train A little cloud of home That keeps forgetting where to rain Borrowed weather On a brand-new square The sun comes out to meet me And I don't know what to wear [Instrumental] [Bridge] My sister calls on Sunday While I'm fixing up the blind She says the rain has stopped back home And asks if I've been keeping dry I tell her that her coat's all right Apart from one loose button now She says, "Well, keep it till December" I say, "You always hated yellow anyhow" [Final Chorus] Borrowed weather I brought it on the train A little cloud of home That keeps forgetting where to rain Borrowed weather On a brand-new square The sun comes out to meet me And I don't know what to wear Borrowed weather With a button hanging loose The woman at the corner shop Says, "Yellow rather suits you" [Outro] The locksmith's turning out his light I leave the coat across my chair Tomorrow, if the sky stays clear I'll take the long way to the square
